TIPS FOR YOUR CAR BRAKING SYSTEM

To reduce brake pipe pressure below equalization, the automatic brake handle must be moved beyond the application zone into “handle-off”. It was the locomotive engineer’s belief that by reducing brake pipe pressure below equalization, additional locomotive brake cylinder pressure would be generated. Equalization for this train occurred when the brake pipe pressure was reduced to about 64 pounds per square inch (psi). Appendix A provides additional details on “equalization” on a standard freight car air brake system.

The proposed settlement includes a divestiture of Faiveley’s entire U.S. freight car brakes business which develops, manufactures and sells freight car brake systems and components including: air brake control valves, hand brakes, slack adjusters, truck-mounted brake assemblies, empty load devices and brake cylinders. The divestiture also includes Faiveley’s FTEN control valve, a freight car brake control valve under development that will be available for full commercialization after approval from the Association of American Railroads.

Car Braking System

The braking system of a car is a good example of how a hydraulic system works. When the brake pedal is pressed a piston operates which forces brake fluid out of the master cylinder and along four narrow pipes to the slave cylinders attached to the brake drums or discs so that the same pressure is applied to the brakes in each wheel. This brings the car to a smooth halt. Provided the system is kept filled with brake fluid, hydraulic brakes work instantly because liquids cannot be compressed to any great extent.

If air leaks into the system, the brakes become much less efficient. This is because, unlike liquids, gases are compressible and some of the movement of the brake pedal is taken up in squeezing the air bubble.
