It sounds like the springs may have been cut shorter then when they were originally installed, and you are hitting the bump stops of the suspension, which if that is the case won't be helped by new shocks. Check your clearances and suspension travel to make sure this is not happening. I have a set of Tokico HP shocks on my '01 Cobra and they work very well. I am using them with H&R race springs and other then watching my speed over traffic bumps have no problems.

2000 Honda Civic EX

Strengths:
It feels like stock, real smooth. The cornering improves dramatically...and the drop is just perfect.

Weaknesses:
None so far...

Summary:
I just got the Tokico HP strut/springs kit installed. I noticed a significant difference over stock. Yes it gets bumpy on rough roads, but what do you expect? If you're careful and whatnot, there shouldn't be a problem. But the overall ride is nice and smooth, feels like stock. Cornering is flawless with no body roll. Very nice setup in my opinion, definitely a good investment thus far. The drop was just right, not too low, nor too high (-1.5 to 1.75"). My civic just looks real clean with it.

Tokico HP Front Struts & Rear Shocks.

Bought a set of Tokico HP shocks and struts. The shipping only took a couple of days from PA to NH. Install was a breeze. Even before putting in the C springs in my 01 V6 I noticed a huge difference in ride quality. There was no more bouncing after hitting a bump. Rock solid! Combined with the C springs it rides like a completely different (and much better) car.

With 160k miles on the factory shocks, you are well overdue for replacements. I have these Tokico HP series struts and shocks, and now my 2k GT rides like a new car, it corners flat, and there is no more slamming the pavement on speed bumps. I changed my shocks/struts at 145k and now wonder why I waited so long. These will remedy your issue, without a doubt.
