There are different kinds of transmission mounts. The difference between mounts is mainly in two areas – the thickness or composition of the steel and the thickness or composition of the rubber. You will find that heavy duty mounts are constructed the same but have a thicker metal body and more rubber to absorb more vibration. Some mounts are welded to the frame while others are secured with brackets and rubber grommets tightened with a torque wrench. If you drive a high performance vehicle with very high amounts of torque or you drive an off road vehicle, high grade transmission mounts are better for longevity.
The transmission mount is an integral part of the drive-train that securely locates the engine and transmission in the chassis, absorbs the rotational torque loading from the engine and isolates the cabin from power-train vibration and noise. The stock BMW mount does this but can get soft over time and allow transmission movement during spirited driving. UUC Motorwerks makes Heavy-Duty and performance mounts out of urethane: a red racing urethane and a black street urethane. Both are fully isolated for reduced noise and vibration.
